Ace of Cakes

If you read my husband's blog you knew a week ago we made an amazing cake that blew bubbles. About a month ago my niece decided she wanted me to make her a Nemo birthday cake. My first thought was I will make a cake in the shape of Nemo. Well after our vacation to Florida Ella's requests stated adding up. Who would have thought a 4 year old would have so much input into her birthday cake. Well I will say I have never met anyone with more imagination than Ella so it should not have surprised me when I got a call from my sister asking if Ella told me what she wanted on her cake. My best guess is mom and dad were talking to Ella about her cake on the last leg of their trip home from Disney. When Sarah called she informed me Ella would like a chocolate cake with Dorri, Bruce the Shark, and Bubbles the fish. At this time she did not want Nemo on her Nemo cake! Well a few weeks later Ella visited the Walter house with my mom and dad and by the end of this trip she also wanted Nemo on her cake along with Cpt Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean. What were we suppose to do with this crazy request? Although Ella is only working on her 4th birthday I did not think there would be anyway to make these things work together and make her happy.
My first thought we would make the cake in the shape of a treasure chest and have the bubbles fish on top keeping it closed. The other characters would just be around the cake. Well I have never worked with gum paste or modeling chocolate so Don and I went to Wal Mart and the Disney store to only find Nemo and Bruce the Shark. Just before we were ready to give up we saw a bubble machine that was the Bubbles fish and had Nemo and Dorri on it in the Disney Store. It was here we got the idea to have the treasure chest open with bubbles pouring out of it. Crazy idea huh? Well after a late night and early morning it worked!!!! Pictures are posted under cakes so check it out.
I figured there was no way to impress this 4 year old so I was going for the adult wow factor when thinking of how to make it. After my parent's anniversary cake I could not do a sheet cake. Well lucky for me my niece has a CRAZY obsession with bubbles. So the cake was a hit for kids and adults. In fact I have been told Ella is telling any random person that will listen about her cake. What would you think if you ran into a 4 year old who is going on about a cake that blew bubbles?
