Anniversary

Written by: Laura Walter

Let me start by saying I have the BEST husband ever! This past Thursday we celebrated our 4th year of marriage. In 4 years we have moved together 4 times to three different states. In all this moving we have learned a lot about each other. For instance I have learned we are both pack rats who like to keep everything. Don loves his computer parts and I love my kitchen crap:) Well, my kitchen crap came in quite handy on our anniversary.

With Don being out of a job we had been talking about grilling steak or something to eat at home and enjoy each others company. Well, because I had been preoccupied with our weekend guests I never thawed the steak. Around 11 on Thursday I called Don and asked what he wanted to do for our anniversary. I knew we had gift cards to Outback and Applebee's so I assumed we would just go out to dinner. At this time Don said he did not care what we would do for dinner. I then got busy with work and forgot about dinner and in that case lunch also until about 3pm. It was at this time I called Don again and asked what was for dinner because I was not going to have lunch that late, but was hungry. It was at this time Don said he was hungry for seafood and had been thinking about Crab Cakes since our trip to Orlando. I said I was fine with seafood and gave some options for dinner...Mitchell's in Newport, Red Lobster, and so on. I told Don it was his choice since he was craving the seafood. Well, on the way home I was talking to Don until I got on 71 then he needed to go to change and get ready for dinner. By this time of the day I was persistent we were leaving as soon as I got home because I was hungry. About the time I got off the exit I called him again because I remembered Outback and Bonefish Grill are under the same umbrella. So I suggested we eat at Bonefish Grill, it is close and we have a gift card. Don thought it was a good idea and we talked a little more until I got home. It was at the end of this conversation that I walked in the door and smelt a wonderful smell of something in a frying pan. If you know my husband you will know he is not amazing around the kitchen so my comment walking into the door was "what's that smell?" This is when I saw Don's face poke around the door with a HUGE smile that said happy anniversary! I just smiled and told him I loved him. At this time Don and I were both a bit skeptical on his dinner due to his lack of experience in the kitchen. Don completed the last crab cake when I got into the kitchen. We decided if they were not good we were going down the street to Bonefish Grill. Well we did not need a back up plan because his crab cakes were DELICIOUS! I made up a quick chipolte lime mayo to go with the crab cakes. These and a wonderful bottle of crisp white Greek wine...it was WONDERFUL

This was the best surprise ever. It was one of the sweetest things Don has ever done. This cooking experience went quite a bit better than the cookies he made for Valentines Day a few years back.
